Kaduna Pharmacists Embark on Outreach to Kick out Malaria

Kaduna State Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria has embarked on Medical Outreach in to kick Malaria out of the state.

Nigerian pilot reports that the Medical Outreach was part of activities marking the 92nd Annual National Conference hosted by Kaduna state chapter of the society.

Speaking to newsmen in Zaria, the state chairperson of society, Pharmacist Aisha Isiyaku Tukur said they chose Zaria for the health outreach in compliance to the promise made to the Emir of Zazzau, Dr. Shehu Idris some times in June this year when they paid him a courtesy visit.

She said the Society had pledged to the Emir that once they secured the hosting right for the Annual National Conference, a health Outreach will be conducted at his palace.

The Chairperson explained that more than 1,000 patients have been targeted for medication on various forms of illness by providing assorted drugs free of charge.

He explained that basically the emphasis was on RDTs test and when tested positive, the Society provides Malaria drugs to the diagnosed patients free.

"Rapid Diagnostic Tests (RDTs) assist in the diagnostic of malaria by providing evidence of the presence of malaria parasites in human blood.

"Malaria RDTs detect specific antigens (proteins) produced by malaria parasites in the blood of infected individuals.

Pharmacist Tukur further explained that RDTs are an alternative to diagnosis based on clinical grounds or microscopy, particularly where good quality microscopy services cannot be readily provided.

She said the overall goal is to ensure that thousands of people receives health coverage to protect them from health emergencies and provide more people with better health and well-being.

The Chairperson added that "the Outreach was also to improve access to essential Medicines and health products to ensure adequate health care provision."

"However we are only given emphasis to RDTs test for Malaria but we are also giving medical attention and drugs to Sugar patients,testing Blood pressure (BP) and Deworming children and adults.

"We are concentrating on Women and Children but the Men are also not left out in our noble gesture." she revealed.
